I have chosen the human condition, as I am interest to compare the different conditions people live on and how this affect us. When someone mentions the human condition, the first thing that comes to my mind is how society affects us and what we do to fit in it. Many people don't live in the same condition maybe we do, i moved to London when i was 13 and i realised that society was really different from Bolivia. Society was more advanced and people of my age were more introduced to electronic devices; cell phones, televisions, computers and video games, while I was thinking of playing outside and the idea of having a cell phone did not fit. Everything that surrounds us will affect the way we live and it depends on us what path we will follow, it will define our human condition, that is why I chose the human condition, to demonstrate that societies change but it is the people who decide that change.
Sandra Eleta
Sandra was recognized for claiming the artistic look towards everyday life in the Afro-colonial and indigenous peoples of the Atlantic zone of the Republic of Panama. I am interest in the way she portraits and shows her culture. At the same time we are able to see the conditions of these people.

Dorothea Lange
Dorothea Lange is an American documentary photographer and photojournalist.Lange's photographs humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and influenced the development of documentary photography. I like the way she shows individual pictures, that have so much meanings at the same time and that can interpret in many ways.

This picture has story behind it, Dorothea Lange was driving past the "Pea-pickers camp", she saw a women ,Frances Owens Thompson, and Lange said to herself "I saw and approached the hungry and desperate mother in the sparse lean-to tent, as if drawn by a magnet". Thompson had to buy her car tiers to get some food for her children, which was supplemented with birds killed by he kids. Lange zoomed into her face to see the worry and the resignation she feels.
I will analyze in more detail the photo of Dorothea Lange. It is not the first time I see this image, I saw it earlier in an exhibition called the radical eye, where I get intrigued by the way in which the photo is taken. the mother is the center of attention of the photo and we can see that she is very worried about of what she is going to do with her children. The image also made me think of the virgin Mary, we can see that the mother has a baby in her arms, Lange maybe showed a similar picture or just wanted to show that a mother always looked after her children, and will fight for a brighter future for them . The picture is in black and white, Lange really zoom into the mothers face, Lange framed 2 of the children as both hide their faces from the camera. |
These are some pictures that i took inspired by Dorothea Lange, this were pictures that i took in the weekend with family, i tried to play around with the zoom. there are some good ones but I have my favourites as well.

Analysis of "Notes from Jo"
"Notes from Jo" is one of a series of photograph by Keith Arnatt. I can see that Arnatt took a picture of a post it note, but not just one but many as the name suggests "notes" is written in plural. The post it note has instructions of how to use a microwave. This could be from Arnatt's partner. There is a phrase that is highlighted in red "you will do this" it shows command from Arnatt's partner, suggesting that Arnatt is learning at the same time how to use a microwave, it also shows how becoming independent takes time and how when we became independent we learn new stuff as; cooking and cleaning.
The way the picture is framed it makes you think at first is not a post it note. Arnatt did a close up and is hard to recognise where the picture was taken, giving us no context. If we use our common sense, we will think the places where we find a post it note, as a refrigerator. For me is new to see a photograph of a post it note, as it is not usual to see one and it also shows me how we are learning new stuff, even when we are older, which is a big step when you become independent.
I can relate to this photograph, because my mum or a teacher when they need to remind me of something or if it is is a instruction they will usually write it down in a post it note.Everybody has ever at least once. Lining in this photograph seems really important, it helps with tone of the picture, as we have the white background but then we have the contrast of the yellow post it note, making a strong lining. There is the lining of the words and how some of this are underlined like "will" and "start", which are command words, and it makes us think why are these two words are underlined.

HOME LEARNING
|
For my homework, I was asked to go to an exhibition relate it to my theme, which is the human condition. I went to the exhibition "another kind of life" this exhibition was amazing, but I was not allow to take any pictures inside. It was related to my theme as it showed the condition that the we have to live on. I found photographers from other countries, and how different they were.
I chose these 3 pictures as there is a big variation between them, they are from different countries, they are from different times, their theme is related as they all show how human adapts and the decision they take for that adaptation. I also too some pictures while I went to the exhibition and when I came from the exhibition. |
Bas Jan Ader
Ader was born the 19 of April of 1942. His father was executed by the nazis, we can actually see that this has affected his work years later. He dedicated his life to being a artist. This are some annotations i did while watching a documentary about him.
Comparison
i am from Sucre-Bolivia, it is a third world country it a developing country. I have seen the difference between London and Sucre and the difference between them is just so much and it is a big changed. after two years of being in London and i have been taking some pictures of people the way they live. Sucre is a small town, a colonial city, it was called "the white city" , the city is a religious city and has some beliefs from time ago.
Quotation
"One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you'd be stricken blind "
Dorothea Lange
i have chosen this quote because Lange here is teaching us that you should live your life like everyday it is the last day one, personally i think this relates to my theme a it express what some people might do or believe on.
Old family photos
we mixed with some of these old pictures and cghanged them
Peter Turnley
He is well known for his human condition pictures, there are base on real life. he has worked in 90 countries and witness the most important stories in the last 30 years. I have been looking at this pictures and it just amazing the way he photographs people who are suffering from activities that are killing them in some ways. I am personally impressed by the pictures he took, they show sadness, making me feel sorry for them. I tried to re-take some of his pictures, but I did not have any important situation going on that weekend.
Being inspired by him i took some pictures.
SARAH BAHBAH 23/10/18
Sarah uses her photos and her knowledge to break down taboos, to explore self-love at all parts. Uses her artistic voice to break down all that things that people feel ashamed of. Her last photoshoot was with one of the biggest celebrities at the moment Noah Centineo, she has decided this to send a message through him to all teenager’s girls to start acting more liberated and start expressing what they are thinking. She particularly concentrates on women, she said, " As an artist it has become my sole motivation to empower women to embrace indulgence of body, mind, and emotion" She wants women to feel proud of their everything and to say it out loud. This inspires me, looking at her pictures gives me plenty of ideas. It relates to my theme as women by looking at models feel less and start thinking they should not be proud of the way they look, which are things of everyday life of the human condition. This photographer shows so much freedom, which makes me think I can do what is on my head. She uses plenty of close up shoots and what it looks to be photoshop in plenty of her pictures, in my opinion her main genre is unusual portraiture
The flower in this picture it is outside focus, making a sharp shape in the picture and it drives the attention. The tones of the picture are warm, it is quite simply picture but if we look at the back we can see a diamond shape fence, we cannot clearly see his face and the flower is covering the other half of his face.
The light is natural and what it looks to coming from outside, as there are some shadows of some circles at the background, but the rest of the image is more darker compared to this small spots around him. Most picture is centred on Noah and the rose. It has rhetorical question at the bottom” what about deep human connection?" This it can have plenty of meanings but in my opinion, I think is what our society is lacking on. More teenagers don’t concentrate on their outside and only on what is their phones and stop talking to people around them. This picture is showing real life events; however, it is not how we view people. As we won’t be concentrating on the flowers or the nature around us, we will be more concentrate on what people are doing or talking about us.

POSTCARDS
Time is key part of life. Most people don't appreciate how important every second of our lives, to make most of every day we are alive is a key point for success. A picture always will show the past and all the memories we had, however pictures will continue to be alive while the memories die in our heads. Postcards are transported to friends, family or anyone that we need to communicate news. If we look at the threshold concepts .... different types of communications, help us to stay in contact with those who are further away from us. Postcards are really old however, some people still use it. In my opinion i think it will be the best way to show the human condition, as it shows how some traditions are being lost through time and we don't do anything to stop them.Mail art started in 1960's, when artists send photographs being collaged or any other way of art y postcards rather than a conventional way.
I chose a few pictures from all the ones that i took in Bolivia, i got the address of some of my friends and members of my family and i sent it to them, I asked them to write a little message about what they think the picture is about.
On Monday i will be using photoshop to mix the picture and the message together, i will experimenting before.
These are my postcards:

These are my postcards:
i wanted to mix the both the picture and the message on the back so i did the following process
After printing them in A3 paper, I stick them on a board and place them back like the actual postcard.
My final outcome was a success, it took me time to think what i wanted to do with them. At first, i thought i would like to cut them and make a collage with them but then i realised that it will be good to have to have the message and the image in the same picture. I used photoshop to mix them together, it was long as i needed to find the best quality of the colours that allowed to see the writing too.
FINAL EVALUATION OF COMPONENT ONE
I began this project by researching different artists and photographers whose work was related to the theme of the Human condition such as: Dorothea Lange, Sandra Eleta and Peter Turnley. I looked into the different techniques they used and how the applied them on their photographs. I looked to Dorothea Lange in detail, i believe that she has big part on this theme. She photographed during the great depression, whre one of her biggest pictures came from "Migrant Mother ", Lange takes a close up of a mother and her children. These inspired me on taking pictures with close ups and one object as the main focus. I applied this technique when I went to Bolivia.
When I went to South America, I realised that the pictures always had a message behind, they will communicate something to us. The human condition was my best project so far,as I believe it will always have a message. the idea about the postcards was one of my best ideas so far. I sent a postcard to my close friends that never went to South America and i asked them to write their opinion on the back, when i got them back i had the idea of combining of them together by using photoshop.
